Examine any new car or truck and chances are you’ll find a familiar chassis, suspension arms, and other components.
Not so with ARRMA’s latest—the Nero monster truck is entirely new from bumper to bumper, and not just in terms of every part being new. The entire truck represents new design concepts for ARRMA, including a move to inboard suspension, “Diff Brain” locking differentials, and a wild-looking chassis that backs up its sci-fi styling with serious strength. The all-new design, combined with a potent 6S-rated power system, is aimed at delivering a highly versatile, high-performance driving experience that can literally shift into Drift, Wheelie, Climb, and “Blast” modes as easily as turning a dial. Sounds like fun, right?
RC Car Action is the first to drive the all-new Nero, so let’s get to it.Inside the Diff BrainThe Nero’s signature feature is “Diff Brain,” which allows the front, center, and rear differentials to be locked and unlocked remotely, via the transmitter. The clever design integrates a micro servo into each of the three gearboxes rather than using linkages, and a yoke mounted directly to the servo slides a collar with six locking pins into or out of each diff to lock or unlock the differential. Normally this would require a 5-channel radio (one channel each for steering and throttle, plus three channels for the three diff servos), but the Nero uses a single channel to operate all three diff servos. This is done via the Diff Brain module, which plugs into the receiver’s channel-3 port.4 Diff ModesThe Nero’s Tactic TTX300 is preset with four differential configurations, each selected by turning the Diff Brain control dial. They are set in this sequence:Blast Mode: All diffs unlockedThe Blast mode offers the best all-around handling, with a truggy-like driving experience.Wheelie Mode: Center diff lockedIf a car with an open center diff starts to wheelie, the differential diverts power to the front wheels, which brings the front end back down.
With the center diff locked, the rear wheels never bleed off power to the front end, so you can lift the front end high.Drift Mode: Center and rear diffs lockedWith the center and rear diffs locked, you can keep the rear wheels spinning full bore without the diffs shunting power disproportionately between the right and left rear wheels or the front and rear end. While the front end steers, the rear end is free to hang out and slide.Climb Mode: All diffs lockedThere’s a reason trail trucks always have locked front and rear diffs (or skip them all together): There’s nothing better for scaling obstacles. It’s the worst for high-speed handling, but when you need to go slow and pick your way through difficult terrain, this is the way to do it.If you want to save yourself $100, you can also get the Nero without the Diff Brain feature. You’ll still get the Diff-Brain-ready transmitter, and the differentials and gearboxes arrive ready to accept the Diff Brain servos and diff-locking bits. ARRMA will offer the required servos, control unit, and mechanicals for Diff Brain capability separately, and the Nero manual covers installation.
The Diff Brain controller allows the receiver’s third channel to operate the three diff-locking servos.Vertical-Plate Chassis with Sci-Fi StyleIf you think an RC vehicle should look just as good with the body off as it does with the body on, you’ll love the Nero. You’ll find a pair of 3mm vertical aluminum plates at its heart, but the cockpit-like roll cage, substantial side pods, and “nose guard” are what gives the Nero its stealth-fighter-meets-Batmobile look. And while stylized, it is functional; all that plastic protects the electronics, and the side pods hold the batteries. Removing the chassis lower cover reveals substantial aluminum motor and transmission mounts that also brace the chassis, and the plastic bulkheads that enclose the front and rear gearboxes and form the chassis’ ends are impressively complex feats of injection molding. Battery access is tool- and clip-free–just press the latch button and the battery door drops open.Inboard Laydown-Shock SuspensionLong, stand-up shocks are typical for virtually every independent-suspension RC off-roader, so it’s always a standout feature when any model bucks the trend.
The Nero is one of very few to eschew the stand-up standard in favor of laydown shocks mounted in the chassis. Long pushrods reach up from the lower suspension arms and through the upper arms to reach ball bearing-mounted rockers, which transfer suspension movement to the red-anodized aluminum shocks. The dampers are robustly built with nutted pistons, bleeder-equipped caps and 4mm shafts. And even though the shocks are out of harm’s way up in the chassis, ARRMA still specs rubber boots to protect the shafts. Expect long life between rebuilds. At the ends of the suspension arms, you’ll find pivot balls to set camber and rear toe, with aluminum retainers to dial out play. The setup offers lots of smooth travel and is soft overall for maximum bump-eating capability.
The high-capacity shocks use bladders for volume compensation and are ruggedly built with aluminum bodies and nutted pistons.All-Metal DrivetrainLest there be any doubt as to the Nero’s ability to handle the full 22.2-volt jolt from a 6S LiPo battery setup, ARRMA has spec’d a full-metal shaft-drive system from the motor on out. The steel ring and pinion gears are joined by aluminum and steel telescoping shafts, with the same construction used for the diff-to-wheel power transfer. Simplicity is also part of durability, and the Nero only has one more gear mesh than a typical 1/8-scale layout, which is as simple as it gets.
Instead of having the spur gear wrap the center differential, the spur gear shares its shaft with an input gear that then drives the center diff’s ring gear. This achieves an appropriate gear ratio for the Nero’s 3.8-inch tires, and also allows a slipper clutch to be fitted—it’s a heavy-duty three-pad unit. The Nero looks like it would be hard to work on, but it only takes two screws to remove the lower chassis cover and access the drivetrain and steering servo.NEW BLX200 POWER SYSTEMThe Nero gets ARRMA’s most powerful brushless system, which combines a 2000Kv sensorless motor with a 150-amp speed control to deliver a claimed top speed of 60+mph on 6S LiPo. While ARRMA’s previous 6S-rated vehicles used Deans-style plugs, the Nero’s fan-cooled controller gets a pair of more robust XT90 connectors on the ends of its 10-gauge wires. Inside the plug’s plastic jacket, you’ll find 4.5mm gold-plated bullets, all the better to cope with big amps. The motor is ruggedly built too, with a deeply finned, machined-aluminum case, 4-pole rotor, 5mm shaft, and rubber-booted wire exit.
The power system doesn’t have a ton of adjustability, but it does have the essentials—which most users probably still won’t mess with. But for the record, you get six brake-strength settings, low-voltage detection on/off, and a reverse lockout option.
You’ll need to supply your own batteries. The Nero requires two 2S or 3S packs with XT90 connectors, and ARRMA recommends a minimum capacity of 5000mAh. We tested the truck with a pair of Duratrax DTXC2004 Onyx 3S packs. With a wheelbase just a tick under 15 inches and a full 18-inch width, the Nero has a bigger footprint than the other players in the 6S monster truck class.PERFORMANCEGetting the Nero ready for action only requires you to fire in the not-included transmitter batteries and a pair of packs for the car—a couple of Duratrax 3S 5400mAh LiPos, in this case. The battery trays open with a push button, so there are no clips to hassle with, and foam spacers accommodate a variety of pack sizes. Gearing was left stock with the installed 15-tooth pinion, but there’s also a 17-tooth gear in the box for speed-running to more than 60mph. Testing began with all diffs unlocked (Blast mode), and the Nero showed off the incredible power expected of a big monster truck running 22.2 volts worth of LiPo juice.
The Nero easily lights up all four tires and “mohawks” the Sand Scorpion rubber as it tears off with roost trailing from all four tires. The suspension is highly active and does a good job of keeping the chassis composed as the tires pump furiously through rough terrain. That soft suspension does contribute to body roll when cornering, but the truck’s wide footprint and the inboard suspension’s low center of gravity make it less roly-poly than you’d expect a monster truck to be. In the air, the Nero is easy to level out thanks to those big gyroscopes (the tires) at each corner and the power system’s instant torque delivery.
If you’ve got the skills to perform backflips and front flips, the Nero has the throttle and braking snap you need to do so. As an all-around dirt thrasher, the Nero is a wild ride and a lot of fun, with all the dirt-hurling power you could ever want. In fact, you’ll do most driving at partial throttle because 6S is just a ridiculous amount of speed and power.Like other 6S monsters we’ve driven, the Nero is easier to drive on 4S, which is also easier on your battery budget. But if you’ve got room for the Nero to stretch its legs on 6S, go for it—and hold on tight. With the Nero’s monster-truck chops confirmed in Blast mode, we turned our attention to the other Diff Brain settings. Clicking to each setting at the transmitter seamlessly shifts the diffs in or out of lock, and you don’t need to stop; just avoid shifting while the drivetrain is under load or at full throttle.
Wheelie mode locks the center diff to prevent it from unloading to the front wheels as they lift. The setting works, but to be fair, it’s not like the Nero needs help doing wheelies on 6S since it has the power delivery of a top-fuel funny car. Shifting to Drift mode locks the center and rear diffs, and makes it easy to hang the back end out for extra-long slides. This works better in dirt than on pavement since the Nero isn’t rolling rock-hard drift tires, but if you want to grind the tires into dust with a blacktop sideways session, go for it. The final setting is Climb mode, which locks all three diffs for maximum traction.
This mode makes the truck a handful for driving at speed, but that’s not what it’s meant for. Instead, the Climb setting is designed to prevent diff unloading when a wheel is in the air while traversing difficult terrain, or when a wheel has minimum traction in conditions that require all four tires to keep pulling—such as slogging through mud or climbing a steep grade.
The Nero’s sensorless power system isn’t ideal for the precise low-speed throttle control that true crawling requires, but it’s far more capable than any open-diff truck will be in those conditions. And if you’re like us, you’ll be more inclined to power-blast your way over obstacles rather than crawl.
With a pair of 3S packs on board, the Nero throws roost for days.THE VERDICTARRMA’s onto something with the Nero. We’ve seen locking diffs on trail-oriented vehicles before, but building the functionality into a high-horsepower monster truck (and adding a lockable center diff to the mix) more fully exploits the potential of radio-lockable differentials. Flipping the transmitter’s Diff Brain switch instantly transforms the Nero’s handling, and makes a truck that’s already a good all-rounder into an even more versatile machine.
Unsurprisingly, a vehicle as large and feature packed as the Nero doesn’t come cheap, but it also comes without skimps— you’re getting a lot of metal, plastic, technology, and performance here. The toyline was introduced by in 1982, and lasted to 1994, producing well over 250 vehicles (i.e. Are meant to move under their own power), and playsets (i.e.
Toys representing static bases of operation such as fortresses, or equipment such as artillery pieces). Many of these vehicles included action figures designed to be the driver/pilot of the vehicle. Other vehicles were sold separately, for use with any G.I. Joe character.In the late 1980s, also produced several exclusive lines of G.I. ( All- Weather/ Environment) Striker was first released in 1985, packaged with the action figure. It featured a removable engine, a 10-round 70mm launcher for projectiles, off-road tires and springing 4WD suspension. Its design was based on the Chenowth M1040/41 first produced in 1982 though not fielded until 1991. In 1992, the cannon was replaced by a water-firing gun, and the vehicle was recast as the Eco-Striker, as part of the Eco-Warriors line.
Blockbuster The Blockbuster was first released in 1994, packaged with the Battle Corps version of. The heavily armored vehicle featured a double-barreled pom-pom cannon, with a ten shot auto-feeding rocket chamber, an anti-aircraft gun, and a front-mounted. Conquest X-30 The Conquest X-30 super-sonic jet was first introduced in the 1986 run of the toyline, packaged with the action figure. The Conquest is an advanced jet fighter, based on the real-life experimental aircraft. It is armed with a laser guidance system, twin 25 mm, and four 'AIM-12 Light Sparrow' missiles. The Conquest X-30 carries '11k' (presumably 11,000 pounds) internal fuel, and two 350 gal.
External fuel tanks. Hasbro marketed it as the Joe team’s counterpart to.It was recast in a red and black cross 'Snake Skin' camouflage, and released as the Python Conquest in 1989, as part of the line. It was later released again as the Conquest X-30 in 1998, with a different color scheme, and bundled with a different character, fellow G.I. It was released once more in 2003, again with a different color scheme, and Slip Stream back as the pilot.In the Marvel Comics G.I. Joe series, the Conquest first appeared in issue #54, where it squared off against the.
It would not be until issue #5 that it would fight against the Night Raven. The Conquest X-30 is featured heavily in the second season of the, when it replaced the as the Joe team’s primary fighting aircraft.Crossfire The Crossfire was the first radio-controlled G.I. It was first released in 1987, packaged with the action figure. The 4WD vehicle came with a control module and twin-lever joystick, and could be controlled from up to 70 feet away. It featured two 'Live-Wire' Sam-19 missiles, 'Pumper' 20mm cannons, and real rubber tires.
The Crossfire was available in two different radio frequencies ('Alpha 27' or 'Delta 49'), so that two vehicles could be operated in the same location. Crusader Space Shuttle The Crusader Space Shuttle is based on the design of the that was released two years earlier. In lieu of the robot arm, the Crusader comes with the Avenger Scout Craft, which was a one-person recon jet, similar to the drone that accompanied the Cobra.
The Crusader also came with a repainted version of the action figure. Desert Fox The Desert Fox 6WD desert jeep was first released in 1988, packaged with the driver. It featured two 'Scorpion' anti-tank missiles, wheels that were heat and puncture resistant, and a rear-mounted anti-aircraft cannon. In 1993, it was recast and released as the Dino-Hunter Jeep, as part of the Dino-Hunter Mission Playset, which also included repainted versions of the figures. Dragonfly XH-1 The Dragonfly XH-1 assault copter was first released in 1983, packaged with the action figure. Armed with four Sidewinder air-to-ground missiles, two Sidewinder H.E. Missiles, and a dual M-34 grenade launcher/2mm Vulcan nose cannon, it became a trademark for the G.I.
The toy's design is based upon the. The Dragonfly is featured in the 1985 computer game.
Wild Bill also pilots a Dragonfly in the C64/CPC version of the video game. It was repainted and released as the Tiger Force Tiger Fly in 1988. Ghoststriker X-16 The Ghoststriker X-16 was introduced in 1993, as the latest in the G.I. Joe Team's high-tech flight technology. Based on thethe jet featured two Sidewinder missiles, four Phoenix missiles, retractable landing gear, and an image projection unit built into the nosecone of the toy. When activated, it would project the illuminated image of an enemy jet on a wall, so that the toy could 'fire a missile' at the image and neutralize it.
The Ghoststriker came packaged with the Battle Corps version of. The H.A.V.O.C. ( Heavy Articulated Vehicle Ordnance Carrier) was introduced in 1986, and came packaged with the action figure.
It was armed with dual recoilless cannons, and 'Lancer' guided missiles. The rear of the vehicle opened to reveal a reinforced lift-off pad, and one-man hover reconnaissance vehicle. Unlike much of the Joe team's vehicles and equipment up to that point, the H.A.V.O.C. Was not based on any real-world vehicle, deployed or in development. It was repainted with chrome parts, and released as the Sky Patrol Sky H.A.V.O.C. Killer W.H.A.L.E.
The Killer W.H.A.L.E. ( Warrior: Hovering Assault Launching Envoy) hovercraft was released in 1984.
It came packaged with the action figure, and featured twin elevating cannons, two rotating machine guns, and six depth charges. The craft's four casters allow it to 'hover' on a flat surface, and although not air-tight, the toy has and is capable of floating on water.
Joe: A Real American Hero comic book, the acronym stood for Water-borne Hovercraft Assault Landing: Experimental, and it first appeared in issue #28, when it participated in an assault on 's lair in Florida's. It was recast in black and red, and released as the Night Force Night Striker in 1988. Mauler M.B.T. The Mauler M.B.T. ( Manned Battle ) was released in 1985, as a replacement for the toy which was discontinued the same year. It was based on the 's prototype RDF/LT (Rapid Deployment Force / Light Tank) produced in 1980.
It came packaged with the action figure. Like the M.O.B.A.T., the Mauler incorporated a small, powered by 4x.
However, the Mauler toy was only capable of going forward, albeit with two speeds, unlike the M.O.B.A.T. Which could also reverse and turn. It was repainted and fitted with new parts in 1989, and released as the Slaughter's Marauders Equalizer. Mean Dog The Mean Dog 3-in-1 armored vehicle was first released in 1988, packaged with the driver. It consisted of a main body with a tow hook and ten missiles, a removable M200 'Spitfire' 20mm cannon, and a fast-attack scout car with a.50 caliber machine gun.
Joe Motorized Battle Tank (MOBAT), Released in 1982.The M.O.B.A.T. ( MOtorized BAttle Tank) was first released in 1982, packaged with the action figure. The design was based on thewith an extendable 130mm main cannon, and a.50 caliber machine gun. 'Motorized' refers to the fact that toy was actually propelled by a small 2x powered electric motor that drove the tank's, allowing the toy to move forward/reverse and turn under its own power; its movement was controlled by moving the tank commander's cupola on the top of the turret.
In later years, Hasbro was able to sell thousands of M.O.B.A.T. Toys to former Soviet children through its joint venture, Funskool (India) Ltd.; the Russians ordered 100,000 units delivered instantly.In the G.I. Joe series, the M.O.B.A.T.'
S most prominent appearances include the first issue, where it is part of a concentrated attack on a Cobra island fortress. Subsequently, the M.O.B.A.T. Is featured prominently in issue #5, in a story dedicated to the vehicle. In-story, the acronym stood for 'Multi-Ordnance '.The M.O.B.A.T. Is one of the vehicles a player can use in the 1985 computer game. The M.O.B.A.T.
Toy also receives a brief mention, along with the, in the horror novel. Mudfighter The Mudfighter bomber was first released in 1989, packaged with the pilot. It featured two bomb racks, with sixteen AS-99 air-to-surface bombs, and a 100FW 1670 lb. 'propfan' propeller with forward/reverse power modes. Persuader The Persuader high-speed laser tank was first released in 1987, packaged with the action figure.
It featured a 'Heatwave' 10 Megawatt armor-piercing laser cannon, six 'Dart' Sam-37 missiles, and 10-wheel drive. It was recast in black and red, and released as the Night Force Night Storm in 1988.
Phantom X-19 The Phantom X-19 stealth fighter jet was first released in 1988, packaged with the pilot. It featured two 'Bullseye' computer-aided low-altitude missiles, two BY-106 'Little Guy' long-range air-to-air missiles, two opening wings with flip out laser cannons, and retractable landing gear. Raider The Raider was first released in 1989, packaged with the driver. It featured titanium reinforced support legs for the upper section, to maintain perfect balance in attack mode, and allow the Raider's armaments to attack oncoming ground vehicles.
It was armed with a dual-impact photo cannon, two tactical infrared computer-controlled laser blasters, and two large missiles housed inside the vehicle. Retaliator The Retaliator helicopter was first released in 1990, packaged with the pilot. It features a capture claw with built in winch hook, super-speed rotor blades, four missiles, and a bomb ramp with nine bombs. Rolling Thunder The Rolling Thunder armored missile launcher was first released in 1988, packaged with the driver. It featured two large 'Double Team' quad thruster rockets, which were hidden in the housing of the Rolling Thunder itself, and could be moved into launch position.
Each rocket contained six 'Firefly' free fall cluster bombs. The Rolling Thunder also came with a small ATSV (All Terrain Scout Vehicle), many laser cannons and missiles, and a turret-mounted 'Short Throw' 90mm main battle cannon.
The S.H.A.R.C. Flying Submarine ( Submersible High-speed Attack and Reconnaissance Craft) was first released in 1984, packaged with the action figure. It featured two acoustic homing torpedoes, twin flip-up 30mm 'Tidal Wave' cannons, and had both underwater and air-attack capabilities. It was recast in black and red, and released as the Night Force Night Shade in 1988. It was repainted with chrome parts, and released as the Sky Patrol Sky S.H.A.R.C.
Shark 9000 The Shark 9000 was first released in 1993, packaged with the Battle Corps version of. It was originally planned to be part of the 'Drug Elimination Force' line of figures and vehicles. The attack boat featured a water cannon, a spring-loaded 'Aqua Attack' missile launcher, H2O X-1 machine guns, and actually floated with wind-up motor action. Skystorm The Skystorm X-wing chopper was first released in 1988, packaged with the pilot.
Based partially on the, it featured a turbo-shaft engine, and was armed with two large bombs and four missiles. Skystriker XP-14F. Original Skystriker combat jet.The Skystriker XP-14F is a variable wing fighter aircraft that was first released in 1983, packaged with the action figure. It featured two each of the S3 Sidewinder, S3 Sparrow and S3Z Phoenix missiles, two ejection seats with working parachutes, and two Vulcan cannons.
It was recast in black and red, and released as the Night Force Night Boomer in 1989.Its first comic book appearance was in issue #14 of the G.I. Joe comic published. It was the central focus in issue #34, as Ace pilots a Skystriker in a dogfight against the Cobra pilot. Neither pilot wins. It often appears in relation to the, the Joe's fictional aircraft carrier. For example, several Skystrikers are lost over the carrier's side during a tsunami.
Its final appearance was in issue #115, after which Ace has traded it for the newer more sophisticated Ghoststriker X-16.When the was launched in 1985, the Skystriker was the team's only fighter aircraft. It was used by every qualified Joe member until the second season, when the Conquest X-30 took over in conjunction with the release of that toy.
Although both the toy and the real life fighter it was based upon were twin-seat designs, it was rarely portrayed as such in the associated comic books and cartoons. In the episode 'The Wrong Stuff', several Skystrikers were modified for space travel. In 'Battle for the Train of Gold', many Skystrikers were destroyed in a strafing run outside of.The Skystriker is also featured in the 1985 computer game.An updated version of the original toy was released in 2011. Featuring new tooling based on the original, but with a one-seat cockpit, the new Skystriker was given the designation XP-21F, with the name parsed as ' Sky Striker' on the packaging. In addition to the new tooling, the XP-21F features darker gray plastic for its body and wings than the original toy.
A redecoed version of the XP-21F mold based on the character was released as a exclusive in 2011. The XP-21F mold was subsequently reused as a 2013 International G.I. Joe Convention exclusive Night Force Night Boomer, and a version (with new parts resembling the jet's boosters) at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Slugger The Slugger Self-Propelled Cannon was first released in 1984, packaged with the action figure. It featured a 170mm Howitzer cannon, a removable.30 caliber machine gun, a rear bumper/stabilizer, and a closable hatch to protect the figure inside the armored vehicle.
Snow Cat The Snow Cat tracked arctic vehicle was first released in 1985, packaged with the action figure. It featured a 680 hp engine, two high-speed 'Avalanche' ski-missiles, and room for up to 10 Joes.
It was repainted and released as the Tiger Force Tiger Cat in 1988. Thunderclap The Thunderclap was first released in 1989, packaged with the driver. It consisted of three components: a tractor vehicle, a trailer vehicle, and a cannon base. The tractor vehicle featured a MG-999 assault weapon, and two surface-to-surface missiles. The trailer vehicle had a computer-controlled blaster cannon, and three surface-to-surface cruise missiles. The main piece of the Thunderclap was its cannon base, featuring the huge extendable 'Annihilator' cannon, with four stabilizer legs to support the base when set up separately from the vehicle itself.
The cannon also had a mechanism that holds the shells, and simulated actual firing. Tomahawk The Tomahawk is an all-weather, twin-engine, twin-rotor heavy lift/assault as well as troop transit helicopter for the G.I. It has a top speed of 175 mph when fully loaded. Its turboshaft engine is fitted with heat/noise reduction and layered with bulletproof covering. It is armed with 6 × 250 lb. Freefall 'dumb' bombs, 2 × air-to-ground missile which can also be used for air-to-air engagements, crew-operated laser-enhanced night vision system.50 calibre machine guns on each side, and a six-barreled 20mm cannon mounted under the nose.The toy version offers seating for a pilot, co-pilot and removable seating for five passengers.
